Tips on How to Clean Your Basement

In our Denver homes, the basement is the one room where we store anything that does not fit  anywhere else. It is essentially a museum of things, housing items like outdated  technology, books, magazines, papers, old furniture, cleaning supplies, auto  accessories, and even pests! Contrary to museums, it is one of our homes’ most  overlooked spaces. This is understandable though. It can be quite stressful and  exhausting to clean the basement. However, we still must deal with them.

Knowing a few tips will help reduce the tension of monotonous cleaning. This article  will guide you on how to approach your basement cleaning task.

Plan your Denver basement cleaning schedule

General cleaning which includes cleaning the

walls and floors can be done once or twice a year

depending on the condition of your basement.

Deeper cleaning such as sweeping floors and

dusting stuff can be done every week or two. It is

also advisable to declutter and sort all your

basement stuff once a year.

Do not neglect crawl spaces and hard-to

reach spots

These spaces are susceptible to pests and

moisture. Failure to maintain these areas

could result in structural damage to the

house’s foundation and poor indoor air

quality, which could occasionally cause the

house to smell musty. Mold and moisture

build-up can greatly affect your home’s

overall insulation.

Declutter and organize your basement

at least once a year

Sort items in your basement into 3 namely:

keep, donate, and sell. Do not pile them

mindlessly. Do this by asking yourself some

of these questions: How often do you use

the item? When was the last time you used

them? It is also a great idea to box items up

while taking inventory, for easier access

when retrieving your belongings.

Inspect the basement before cleaning

This will help you evaluate the type of cleaning

materials and cleaning agents to use for the job

ahead. It is smart to prepare a to-do list prior to

cleaning. Do this in order of the cleaning sequence.

By doing this, you know exactly what to do and this

will help you estimate what and how much cleaning

materials to use, how long the job is going to take,

and maybe how many extra hands to hire if you

need help with the task.

Apply 5S system: Sort, Set in Order,

Shine, Standardize, and Sustain

5S is a system for setting up

workplaces so that work may be done

effectively, safely, and efficiently. This

approach emphasizes placing

everything in its proper place and

maintaining a tidy workplace, which

makes it simpler for individuals to

execute their jobs without wasting time

or running the danger of getting hurt.

This can also be adapted when cleaning big homes in general. It would be less tiring  to clean little by little after every activity rather than doing it all at once.

So, the next time you plan to organize and clean your basement, you can always check  out the tips mentioned above rather than cleaning mindlessly. Have a list. Put on some  upbeat music. Sort tasks in a way that makes sense to you. It will help save your time,  money, and effort. Most of all, it can spare you from the unnecessary stress of cleaning  your basement.
